i got myself into somethin of a prickly pickle and i was hoping to get some feedback from all y’all before it turned into a big thing between me and the hubby!
so for the last couple a years me and hubs have been feeding our vamps blood we source from his hunts and our farm (we got chickens we raise for food, sometimes a goat or two) because it was a waste not to. it’s gotta go somewhere! and if you gots stuff that need to eat it why not?
but one of our yas got sick last week an when i took him to the exotics vet she said that vamps cant eat animal blood! that it ain’t got the right nutritients or whatever and that it could make all our boys real sick. she said we needed to start sourcing some proper people juice or else we’re playin’ a dangerous game with our boys’ health.
well i ain’t able to wrap my head around getting nobody’s blood and i sure as hell ain’t bleeding myself dry haha, and it was just our one ya. the others are right as rain! and this is the first time any of em been sick in the twenty years weve had them!
but my hubby says we gotta listen to the vet or else were gonna be lookin at a bad time and a heap of vet bills. i just think its ridiculous.
so do y’all have any suggestions on ethical blood sourcing if we have to use people juice? or are y’all like me and you think the chicken and deer blood is fine and perfectly safe?
big nuff that i can’t keep em in a standard terrarium if thats what you mean. hubs and i converted a corner of the barn into a big ol hutch for em. lots of space for em and solid sides and plenty a hides and toys and places to climb. theyre true bloods so theyre a bit on the big side for yas, but i mean… i never thought theyd want for anything bigger than a chicken!!
but the point ain’t that theyre too big or too small for chickens or worms or rats. the doc straight up said the reason fernando was sick was cause i wasnt feedin him right. that animal blood lacks somethin or other that vamps can get outta human blood. said it was kinda like how cats needed to eat meat or they get sick..?
naw. dont listen to the vet. i done been raising vamps for longer than some of these kids been alive. human blood aint right. aint no ethical way to get it. chicken and deers spoiling them.
yup. from my own coop. hubs loves to hunt but you can’t bag a deer every time haha. when he does bag one the blood does last us a good, long while. but chickens are easier to get cause we got so many and im fryin em up for dinner anyway.
alright. check your chicken feed then. one of mine got sick bc my drac was drinkin blood from a neighbor’s cow and it turns out there was some kind of chemical in the cows food. harmless for the cow, a mess for my boy.
stop the deer blood unless you got no choice. parasites.
The feed likely has mycotoxins and is contaminated. Throw it away, throw out any stored blood, and buy new feed for the chickens. Do not use human blood to feed your vampires. While there are some arguments that it is the most nutritionally complete food for your YAs (which is likely what your vet meant), there are many ethical reasons to not pursue that method of feeding. There’s already enough of a blood shortage in hospitals nowadays anyway.
Get new feed for your chickens. Get new blood for your vampires. Don’t steal blood from sick and injured people.
