Ok so I am trying real hard not to freak out but I went with a friend to an exotic pet show in Oklahoma recently with every intention of getting a python, but I ran into some guy who was selling like dracs and shit and we got to talking. I said I had never thought of owning a vamp before and told him I was interested in a bigger pet (hence the python!!) and that vamprs were pretty small and he was like, “Yeah usually because we try to keep them from getting too big but I have a big girl whose a rescue from an illegal breeding operation and shes got a real good temperament.”
I was going to say no but he talked to me for like an hour and eventually wore me down and introduced me to the vamp in question and she was like… a lot bigger than the ones I saw elsewhere at the expo but she had all the hallmarks of a vamp she was just big. And I was worried but he said that this happens sometimes if a vamp gets fed irresponsibly that they’ll get like people-sized and become difficult to handle but that this one was a breed called a ya (??? I don’t know what that is) that’s really docile and so he had no issue rehoming her.
And I felt bad because she seemed really upset so I bought her and some supplies from the guy and picked her up before I went home and when my buddy met up with me in the parking lot he was so confused, but he doesn’t know a lot about vamps either because again we were mostly there for snakes.
So I brought the vamp home and I set it up and while I’m setting it up and getting her contained she just looks at me and like starts making sounds? And I don’t know a lot but I know these weren’t just normal pet sounds it sounded like a language just not one that I speak?? And so I started looking things up and from what google translate says she’s speaking Finnish??
And so I took her to a guy I knew who does raise dracs and he gave her a look-over and said like yeah she definitely has the traits of being a vampire sort of because she needs the blood and she has the teeth and she can kind of turn into a mist (how do you even keep them from doing that???) but she also doesn’t seem like shes bothered by the sun or holy water and salt doesn’t contain her and all sorts of things that are weird.
And he said she may be some kind of thing called a thin-blood where they’re a vampire but they’re not and they’re in some kind of weird legal gray area in terms of the pet trade??
What do I do???? She keeps saying things to me that seem real mean and she keeps sneaking out of her enclosure and I don’t want to get in legal trouble and this feels almost like owning a person so who do I contact? What do I do? I can’t just let her go can I????
going to an expo and buying the first thing you’re offered without doing any research? they should have some kind of test you take before you even step foot in a vamp expo.
About two weeks because my friend was trying to figure out if there was a way to rehome her or a rescue that would take her and we haven’t found anything so I came online to ask for help and your NOT!!! HELPING!!!!!
Okay, since sylvie and mirriam are gone I went and looked online. And bro lol you are an idiot. I hope you know that…
That aside it does look like this has happened before. Theres specific thinblood rescues out there because it looks like theres a lot of cretins who just snag newvamps to sell for the sake of having stock but they dont actually make sure theyre… you know. True vamps.
They do usually get passed off as yas though. They got you on that one lol…
Maybe see if you have a local thinblood sanctuary and see if they can help.
They’re more dangerous actually wow!!!?!?!?!?!?! They’re also bigger, illegal to own without a permit and need to be given to a proper fucking sanctuary. You know. Like a tiger.
There’s no thin-blood sanctuary in my area the closest one is four hours away outside of Nashville and I don’t have any way to get there!!! What do I do???
Jesus christ. Okay. Cool. Good to know I can’t even go on vacation without people being stupid.
Just a reminder that we are here to help and support each other and being a douchebag isn’t going to make anyone here happy. Least of all Mirriam. When she gets off of work she is probably going to come after you all with the wrath of god. :)
@Nacht – Don’t you DARE tell anyone in this forum to kill themselves. I appreciate you trying to help but chill out.
@Noss– You know good and goddamn well what Nacht meant and, even if I agree that your description was more apt, that’s no excuse to act like that. Dude, you’re better than that.
@Plumeria – Thanks for finding me on Facebook to let me know what was going on.
@OP – You’ve already been told a thousand times how irresponsible that decision was, but you seem like a nice guy and I can bet you’re coming from a good place. Being told a creature came from a bad home and needs a new, loving place to live is enough to tug on anyone’s heartstrings. I firmly believe that you wanted to do what was right and good instead of letting some poor, maltreated beastie sit in a cage and wither away. Kudos for having a big heart, but a big ‘tsk-tsk’ on being so impulsive.
It really does sound like you have a thinny, which is unfortunate. They’re in a weird in-between state, just like your friend said, where they’re considered both wild and domesticated depending on where you live, and they’re often sourced through unethical means (allowing true vamps to propagate via non-vamps, which is a huge moral no-no). Nacht was right in that the unscrupulous types who try to pawn them off tend to try to pass them off as YAs, because (like YAs) they have a very “mild” appearance.
They can’t be released into the wild because they still need blood to live and can become an ecological nightmare, but there are a lot of rescues that will take them in. Most cities have a vamp rescue of some design, and you don’t necessarily have to relinquish them to a thinny-only rescue. A regular rescue can often help with relocating them to a thinny sanctuary so they can live out the rest of their unlives in peace, because trust me! We rescuers know how few and far between those sanctuaries are! :)
Contact your local rescue and let them know what’s going on. And tbh, I’d contact some government agencies with the contact of the guy you bought it from, because they’re going to want to investigate. Where there’s one, there’s often many that need to be seized and saved.
And once all is said and done, go get you that python you wanted! Or if you’re not entirely put off by the idea of being a vamp owner, maybe swing back by a reputable seller and get yourself a drac. We can definitely help!
So any rescue may take her??? Oh thank god thank god thank god. I have been so stressed about this and everyone had me thinking that I was going to get locked up for the rest of my life for buying a pet lol.
@OP - Well, not any old rescue. It’s like any shelter. Sometimes they have restrictions, but they should be able to point you in the right direction and help you transport her to a proper sanctuary. You may have to call around but you’re definitely not the first person duped like this! It doesn’t happen often, but the rescue I work at gets the occasional call about thin-bloods. It’s an unfortunate fact that they’re becoming more common. :(
Out of sheer curiosity, do you remember who sold her to you?
@Nacht - Goodnight, Nacht. For your tantrum, you’re getting a 24 hour ban. See you tomorrow when you’ve had time to sleep it off. :)
I actually still have the card that the guy gave me because I stuck it in with the paperwork he gave me showing that she was a ya (which I guess is a bunch of bullshit). Says his name is Lawrence Bloom and his company or whatever is Bloom’s Adventure Pets???
